Deliverables thus far leading up to midterm reviews for Studio 3B. The first section of this page contains an initial exploration of Diagrid structural system typologies. The structural typology exploration led to the collaboration with Kevin Flores for the larger studio program focus, the analysis and design of a Multi-Modal Transportation Center and Energy Exchange located in the port of Long Beach, CA.

 

 

Diagrid typological analysis

The first line in the filed study below represents the exploration of numerous diagrid structural systems applied to various surface conditions. Once an understanding for the structural typology had been attained, a more in depth exploration of diagrid systems was applied to three varying site conditions.

Prior to any design work being derived for the Transportation Center project, an in depth case study of an existing Multi-Modal hub, the Amsterdam Centraal Station, was undergone.

 
 
 
 

 

diagrammatic Site analysis

The preliminary focus of the San Pedro Portal design program was the diagrammatic analysis of existing conditions at the chosen site. Our site is the existing International Cruise Terminal off the San Pedro Harbor coastline. The decision was to analyze the surrounding site context and topography, all forms of transportation into the site, in addition to the international shipping routes in and out of the Long Beach Harbor,.

After a conceptual understanding for the San Pedro Portal’s programmatic elements was attained diagrammatic analysis was used to show how the rough program blocks, onsite pedestrian circulation, and multi-modal transportation systems integrate with one another.
